What is a good program to use to make an online comic?

I’m looking for an easy to use program to create a professional looking online comic, similar to Explosm, or Order Of The Stick in design. I currently draw all my comics by hand and then stick them on the computer so that I can put them on my myspace page, but I want it to look more professional.
Although I’m on the computer a lot, I’m still a beginner when it comes to image programs. I hate using photoshop because it’s so complex. I’m thinking maybe a Gif type program so that I could also make an animated comic if I wanted to.
To show you an example of the thing I want to create in this program, then have a look at these two links, which are one full comic.

I’d like this software to be free, so please don’t suggest anything that I’m going to have to pay for just to see how it works.
